NEW DELHI: Government nurses in Delhi on Monday objected to the alleged outsourcing of nurses to the city government-run Indira Gandhi Hospital. The nurses also accused the Delhi government of diverting nurses from other health facilities to the newly built multi-specialty hospital. The nurses, under the All India Government Nurses Federation (AIGNF) banner, have raised the issue in a letter with Delhi LG VK Saxena.
The nurses’ body called on Saxena to issue directives to stop the outsourcing practice allegedly being taken over by the Delhi government-run hospital. In its letter, the AIGNF accused the city government of being in a hurry to provide “inadequate” health services to the public.
“Through an advertisement, we learned that the hospital’s recruitment process for nurses was initiated through the outsourcing method. It has sanctioned 1,241 beds. Currently. It operates various departments such as 24-hour emergency services, female department, male department and various special departments, etc. The services of the OPD are provided.
“These services are run by a very small number of nurses. Currently, the hospital is run by nurses who have been siphoned off from other Delhi government hospitals, meaning that there is also a shortage of nurses. It seems that the Delhi NCT government is in a hurry to provide inadequate health services to the general Delhi public,” the nurses wrote in the letter.
The nurses accused the Delhi government of discriminating against the nurses’ cadre. “All the doctors were regularly hired on full pay and allowances. An outsourcing method is used for nurses,” the association said. They mentioned that the outsourcing practice is against government policy and poses a risk to public health as less skilled workers may be hired by outsourcing agencies.
